Demographics create time bomb for Canada

In the last 50 years, Canada's workforce grew by 200 per cent. But government forecasters say that, without some radical changes, the workforce will only grow by 11 per cent in the next 50 years -- and that figure includes the effects of current levels of immigration.

"Our demographics are working against us," Human Resources Minister Monte Solberg said in a speech to the Canadian Building and Construction Trades' Legislative Conference.

"Baby boomers are set to retire and our low birth rate means demand for workers will soon outstrip supply."

Already, more than 80 per cent of working-age Canadians have a job -- an all-time high.

Solberg marshalled the following data to back up his claim:

- British Columbia will be short 350,000 workers over the next 12 years.

- Alberta will require 100,000 workers over the next 10 years.

- Ontario will need 560,000 more workers by 2030.

- Quebec will have 1.3 million job openings by 2016.

IMF Report has concerns about world economy

In its World Economic Outlook released Wednesday, the IMF sharply cut its growth projections for the subprime woe epicenter, the United States, and slashed expectations for the rest of the world to a lesser degree as well.

A key phrase in the above para is the "lesser degree".

This report again highlighted the need for investors to have a global outlook in their investments and lifestyles. There is no denying that the world economies are connected. But the savvy investor and Global Resident, diversifies his portfolio to safeguard his capital and its growth. In an era where large chunks of networth are locked in your primary residence - the word portfolio includes your home. So a decision to downsize in the States could mean instead of having both your properties in California - to selling one and buying an investment property in Mexico (or Costa Rica or Panama).

Moving to United Arab Emirates - Destination Guide

United Arab Emirates

United Arab Emirates is a country that hardly needs any introduction with the latest upswing in the Oil rates. United Arab Emirates(UAE) is a federation of 7 states, namely that of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah.

The UAE that we know today is a result of the tribes the sheikdoms signing the federation uniting all the 7 states or the 7 sheikdoms together. Initially the sheikdoms had all entered into a treaty with the United Kingdom; this was called the British-Trucial Sheikhdoms treaty. When this treaty expired in 1971, this led to the seven sheikdoms forming a federation of states, called the United Arab Emirates. With Oil and natural gas leading the way to the development of the UAE economy, today it is one of the most well developed economies in the world.

Today, UAE could be considered as an industrialized nation with the economic boom in full swing. It has a wide manufacturing base coupled with an ever expanding services sector. The hike in the number of viable opportunities as well as the wages is attracting more and more expats to this desert federation, now more than ever before. With $350 billion worth of construction projects including the construction of the world’s tallest building on the anvil, the number of contracts and the wages are ever expanding.

With opportunities abound, it is no surprise that nearly a huge chunk of the UAE population are expats.

Types of visas

For a tourist visa one would need the sponsorship of an UAE resident, this is expected especially if you are arriving from a non-western country. For visitors from countries, like Europe and the United states, the visa is granted on arrival. Today UAE has the largest work force that is non native to UAE and with such high wages, is it any wonder that people come here in droves, especially from south Asian countries to work?

The work visa can be applied as the visit visa and the process of application depends on the nationality of the applicant. Then you have the residence visa which one can utilize for residing in this country. Resident visas are generally viable for a period of three years and the applicant needs to have a thorough medical check up before he or she is granted one. The immigration laws have become severe here of late with the penalty for lying as well as overstaying being a bit on the extreme, e.g., 50 lashes.

That aside, this is a wonderful country to visit and the moonlit camel rides in the desert are not to be missed on any account. The economy is ever growing as far as UAE goes, and with the opportunities that are available here, anyone can make it big. UAE is an Islamic country and as such there are certain requirements as far as dresses and behavior goes. There is a certain dress code to maintain and a code of behavior that all visitors must adhere to at all costs.

All that apart, this country is quite charming to get acquainted with whether it is the first time or a repeat visit.

Moving to Panama - Destination Reports Series

PANAMA

Panama is better known for its canal than anything else. It is located at the very edge of Central America and is literally the bridge connecting both the North American and the South American continents kind of like an intercontinental bridge over time and matter. Panama borders both Costa Rica and Columbia and in addition is also the location of the erstwhile Panama Canal. As a nation, it is the largest consumer in Central America and is one of the most developed economies in the region with the exception of the United States of America.

The world knows Panama today on account of its Canal and on account of one infamous personality, the ex ruler of Panama, Manuel Noriega. To say that Noriega was a ruthless dictator would indeed be an understatement and he exemplified ‘the Iron fist’ in more ways than one. But the United States had enough of General Noriega and in 1989 invaded the country, removed him from power and extradited him to the United States to stand trial for drug smuggling. Panama has been at the center of many an exciting story becoming a reality; movies have been made from them. Today, Panama is fast rising as one of the most developed countries of Central America and it seeks to expand its economic ties to the entire region.

The creation of the Panama Canal has caused this little country more than its share of troubles starting with the treaty that gave sole rights of the Canal to the Americans and to the American Invasion of Panama. In the end the Panama Canal and the assets it holds were all returned to the native Panamas, so that they could finally get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Today the Canal serves as a vital shipping link through which Panama continues to prosper and so much so, that the Canal is soon going too be expanded to accommodate the post Panamax ships as well.

With a resurgent economy and a pleasing climate all the year around, it is no wonder that a huge amount of people prefer to relocate to Panama, for both short as well as long duration. The Panama Canal is in the process of getting expanded and that alone means that several opportunities for contractors and workers alike. In addition, the Panamian economy is on a surge and as such several business opportunities are opening up and this has led to the Government granting the visas as a way of attracting more investment into the country.

Today, a person can choose to apply for either the immigrant visa or the non immigrant one, the former being reserved mostly for tourists or businessmen who prefer to stay in Panama only for a short duration. Where as the later is reserved mostly for workers and businessmen who are interested in investing in Panama and as such would prefer to say for a longer duration. With the carrot and the stick policy in the visa working so well as far as the investment inflows are concerned, the number of viable opportunities in Panama is increasing by the day.

Besides tourism, Panama is keen on further developing its economy and consolidating its position. Its immigration laws may look a bit antiquated and one may need the help of a Panama lawyer to make sense of them.

Panama is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year and truth be told, it is also a wonderful place to relocate to.
