Panama is better known for its canal than anything else. It is located at the very edge of Central America and is literally the bridge connecting both the North American and the South American continents kind of like an intercontinental bridge over time and matter. Panama borders both Costa Rica and Columbia and in addition is also the location of the erstwhile Panama Canal. As a nation, it is the largest consumer in Central America and is one of the most developed economies in the region with the exception of the United States of America.
The world knows Panama today on account of its Canal and on account of one infamous personality, the ex ruler of Panama, Manuel Noriega. To say that Noriega was a ruthless dictator would indeed be an understatement and he exemplified ‘the Iron fist’ in more ways than one. But the United States had enough of General Noriega and in 1989 invaded the country, removed him from power and extradited him to the United States to stand trial for drug smuggling. Panama has been at the center of many an exciting story becoming a reality; movies have been made from them. Today, Panama is fast rising as one of the most developed countries of Central America and it seeks to expand its economic ties to the entire region.
The creation of the Panama Canal has caused this little country more than its share of troubles starting with the treaty that gave sole rights of the Canal to the Americans and to the American Invasion of Panama. In the end the Panama Canal and the assets it holds were all returned to the native Panamas, so that they could finally get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Today the Canal serves as a vital shipping link through which Panama continues to prosper and so much so, that the Canal is soon going too be expanded to accommodate the post Panamax ships as well.
With a resurgent economy and a pleasing climate all the year around, it is no wonder that a huge amount of people prefer to relocate to Panama, for both short as well as long duration. The Panama Canal is in the process of getting expanded and that alone means that several opportunities for contractors and workers alike. In addition, the Panamian economy is on a surge and as such several business opportunities are opening up and this has led to the Government granting the visas as a way of attracting more investment into the country.
Today, a person can choose to apply for either the immigrant visa or the non immigrant one, the former being reserved mostly for tourists or businessmen who prefer to stay in Panama only for a short duration. Where as the later is reserved mostly for workers and businessmen who are interested in investing in Panama and as such would prefer to say for a longer duration. With the carrot and the stick policy in the visa working so well as far as the investment inflows are concerned, the number of viable opportunities in Panama is increasing by the day.
Besides tourism, Panama is keen on further developing its economy and consolidating its position. Its immigration laws may look a bit antiquated and one may need the help of a Panama lawyer to make sense of them.
Panama is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year and truth be told, it is also a wonderful place to relocate to.
